The Governments flagship Building Safety Bill received royal assent on 28th April and is set to become law. Aimed at providing a generational change in the construction industry to improve health and safety of residential buildings, it will also have a profound effect on how Building Control Bodies operate with the introduction of the Building Safety Regulator as part of the Health & Safety Executive to enforce regulatory regime for residential buildings over 18m in height, and ensuring competence for both building control bodies and individuals working in the building control profession.

Exciting and challenging times for all in our profession and one that is welcomed by Meridian and staff.

Congratulations to two of Meridian’s Midland surveyors, Ryan Roberts, pictured below, and Daryl Edwards who both gained full membership of the Association of Building Engineers at their first attempt. Well done lads..a great achievement and reward for all the hard work and commitment shown since stepping through our doors as trainees 5 years ago.

Congratulations to our Building Control Surveyor Luckmaan Yaseen on gaining his NVQ6 diploma in Building Control.

Luckmaan is the first of many going down this route as part of our structured training program to upskill all our surveyors in the coming years.

Luckmaan’s next step in his career is to gain full professional membership with CABE and becoming a role model to our other assistant surveyors who hope to follow in his rather snazzy footsteps.

Following the uncertainty due to COVID 19, Meridian would like to advise about our current working practices.

Since the start of the lockdown earlier this year, Meridian made a number of measures to ensure that we are Covid Secure. All staff were quickly re-deployed as home workers whilst also maintaining our service delivery based on current good practice, Government guidelines and our own risk assessments.

Although a number of staff have been furloughed during the process, Meridian’s service has not been disrupted.

Its business as usual for Meridian whilst ensuring that both our staff and clients remain safe in these uncertain times.

Congratulations to a number of our employees who have recently been successful in gaining their professional qualifications as part of Meridian’s in house training program.

Ryan Roberts, one of our Midland surveyors, has recently qualified from the University of Wolverhampton with a First Class Honours degree in Building Surveying, and in doing so was also awarded the CBRE award for the student who demonstrated an outstanding contribution to the built environment sector throughout their degree. Ryan has been with Meridian for two years now and well on his way to achieving full membership of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS).

Rebecca Jones who was our first trainee surveyor to join Meridian some five years ago, and based out of our Stafford Office,  has recently gained full corporate membership of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) following on from her first class honours degree in Building Surveying from Birmingham University.

Andrew Cronan who works in our Northern area team has been successful at the first attempt in becoming a full corporate member of the Chartered Association of Building Engineers (CABE) after a very successful three years working for Meridian.

The government has published a “clarified version” of Approved Document B – the part of the Building Regulations that relates to fire safety.

The new version has been simplified in a bid to make it easier for building owners to follow and understand the requirements to avoid any misinterpretations.

Among the changes in the revised Approved Document B is updated guidance for external walls to ensure that building owners understand the current requirements for buildings over 18m including the guidance relating to fire spread over the external walls which were updated in December 2018.

The main change in the new document  brings together guidance for flats and houses under the same volume and comes into force on August 30 2019 subject to the transitional provisions for existing submitted schemes.

Following recent reports and speculation of insurance issues currently affecting Approved Inspectors, we would like to reassure our clients that Meridian Consult Ltd is covered by a Government approved scheme of insurance that covers our continuing operations as an Approved Inspector – this can be viewed at

We continue to serve our client base with a service that is thoroughly audited by the Construction Industry Council and our ISO9001 quality accreditation.
