Code for Sustainable Homes
Launched in 2007 as the national standard to be used in the design and construction of greener homes in England. Since May 2008 all new homes have been required to have a mandatory code rating and a code certificate to be included in the Home Information packs. Since the 1st September 2009, all planning applications for developments of 5 or more dwellings in Wales are required to meet Code Level 3 and many planning authorities in England are requesting code compliant schemes as a planning condition.
What is a Code Home
The Code is a set of sustainable design principles covering performance in 9 key areas: Energy & CO2 emissions, Water, Materials, Surface Water Run-off, Waste, Pollution, Health & Wellbeing, Management and Ecology. The Code uses a rating system of one to six stars based on the nine assessment catagories, with one star being entry level and six stars representing a zero rated carbon home with additional sustainable solutions.
